      BMW develops new 3 - cylinder turbo petrol engine

      In order to offer a more fuel efficient and more refined engine to the mileage conscious Indian buyers, the makers of country’s largest selling car brand BMW are planning to introduce their all new three cylinder engines across the India portfolio models. The new highly fuel efficient BMW three - cylinder engine will be on same line as Ford’s 1 liter EcoBoost engine and Volkswagen’s 1.2L petrol engine used in Polo hatchback.

      It is to be mentioned here that the German auto giant BMW has already showcased its 3 cylinder turbo-diesel engine. The petrol version however, is still in the development stage and could take anywhere between 2 to 3 years to be incorporated in a production version. Initially, the 3 - cylinder petrol engine will be launched with company’s flagship sedan - F30 BMW 3 series, making it the first volume selling car to have 3 - cylinder petrol engine.

      In recent years, the trend of using three cylinder engine has been surging upwards as a range of new car have been launched with this type of engine format, including the likes of Maruti A-star, Maruti Alto K10, Maruti Omni, Nissan Micra petrol, Hyundai Eon, Volkswagen Polo petrol soon to be launched Renault Pulse petrol.

      BMW, however, is expected to roll-out this 3 - cylinder petrol engine incorporated with turbo charging to make these compatible with the entry level luxury cars.
