Google has made its mark as the most efficient search engine. Now, Google intends on taking things a step ahead by catering to the automotive sector by integrating Android technology for cars. Google has been in talks with auto industry leaders and tech companies to see that the car becomes a reality in this year. As per sources, Google has already formed an Open Automotive alliance with the likes of General Motors, Honda, Audi and Hyundai.

Globally renowned chipmaker NVIDIA has been roped-in by Google to deliver Android application support to the automobile industry at a larger scale. It has been said that the foundations have been set and work has started on a ground level. An official release from Open Automotive Alliance states, “timing for each automaker will vary”. Sources have also given hints about cars with Android technology being launched by the end of this year.

The Open Automotive Alliance is based on factors like customization, openness and scale that is aimed at accelerating auto innovation. Other carmakers have been invited to join the brigade and it is expected that many would join soon. The press release also states that, Open Automotive Alliance is dedicated to a common platform to deliver a safer driving experience, innovative and intuitive for customers. Google's rival Apple isn't far behind, they have announced their collaboration plans with different car makers for integrating iOS devices in their cars.

Yoshiharu Yamamoto, President, CEO and director of Honda Research and Development Co., Ltd stated, “We are very pleased to join this alliance with Google as a founding member because Honda is committed to providing the very best connected-car experience to our customers. The Honda team is looking forward to collaborating with Google and all OAA members to help advance the safety, value and ease of use of connected-car technologies.”

"The expansion of the Android platform into automotive will allow our industry partners to more easily integrate mobile technology into cars and offer drivers a familiar, seamless experience so they can focus on the road." said SundarPichai, SVP of Android, Chrome & Apps at Google. He also mentioned, “Millions of people are already familiar with Android and use it every day”.

The practical benefit of this Android technology is yet to be seen. Moreover, critics have also questioned the safe usage of this device while driving. But from a customers point of view this is an additional benefit that is being offered with an array of other benefits.
