Following quite a few delays, Jeep has finally arrived in the Indian market. The iconic American SUV maker, in fact, has unveiled the Wrangler, the Grand Cherokee and its high-performance version called the Grand Cherokee SRT at the ongoing Auto Expo 2016.

Last year, Jeep started local production of their models in Brazil and China and today, the brand has arrived in what is the fifth largest car market in the world. In fact, Jeep has invested around $280 million in its manufacturing joint venture, Fiat India Pvt Ltd, with Tata Motors. This investment in Fiat’s Ranjangaon facility in Pune will allow Jeep to roll out an all-new model by 2017.

As for the existing line-up, both the Wrangler Unlimited and the Grand Cherokee will be initially brought to Indian shores as fully imported models. While the traditional looking Wrangler is widely considered to be among the best off-roaders in the world, the Grand Cherokee is more of a luxury SUV to rival the best from Europe.

For now, the Wrangler will be powered by a 2.8-litre in-line four turbo diesel engine paired to a 5-speed automatic gearbox. The Grand Cherokee, on the other hand, will get a 3-litre V6 turbo diesel engine with up to 240bhp of power and 570Nm of torque. The high-performance SRT version though bears a massive 6.4-litre V8 petrol engine and an 8-speed automatic gearbox.

Jeep has officially announced that it will start selling the Wrangler and the Grand Cherokee in India by mid-2016.
