Scream performance all you like, there’s no denying the fact that Indian car buyers are still a frugal bunch. For them, stretching the fuel miles is high on their mind, aka the quintessential ‘Kitna Deti Hai’ queries. Here’s a quick roundup of the 10 Best Fuel Efficient Cars you Can Buy in 2016.

Maruti Ciaz: The Ciaz SHVS Diesel Hybrid happens to be among the most fuel efficient cars on sale today. The mild-hybrid technology means that it returns an astonishing 28.09 km/l (ARAI certified) figure.

Maruti Celerio: Another Maruti-Suzuki product, this time the Celerio with its twin-cylinder DDiS tech, 793 cc engine, delivering an ARAI certified 27.62 km/l mileage, is next up on the list of best fuel efficient cars on sale today.

Maruti Baleno: Maruti in-fact, is no stranger to high mileage cars in India, having had an illustrious history filled with such models. The iconic Baleno, is one such name. Resurrected for the now-generation, this large hatch comes in third on the list at 27.29 km/l (ARAI certified) figure.

Honda Jazz: Breaking up MSIL’s hegemony is the Japanese rival - Honda. Long known for their butter smooth powertrains that pack more than a wallop while maintaining frugal fuel-sipping habits, the diesel Jazz lives up to this reputation. Honda has given the 99bhp motor taller gearing to ensure it returns a claimed 27.32 km/l mileage.

Tata Tiago: Rounding up the top-5 of the 2016 fuel-efficient cars list is home-grown auto major Tata Motors latest small-car, the Tiago. A comprehensive challenger (and in many ways, better) to the established competition, the 1.05 litre Revotorq powered hatch returns a 27.28 km/l average.

Tata Nano: Another small-hatch from the house of Tata, this time, the revolutionary Nano. Now in GenX avatar, the 624cc Nano, like the Celerio, is powered by a twin-cylinder engine, albeit, in petrol guise. It returns a claimed 23.1 km/l fuel average.

Maruti Alto 800: Small hatches in-fact, dominate the petrol-powered fuel-efficiency game. The Alto 800 is another one on the most fuel efficient cars list from the Maruti-Suzuki stable, returning a mileage of 24.7 km/l (claimed).

Renault Kwid: Earlier last year, French manufacturer Renault, lay claim as the most serious challenger in the small-car segment. The KWID has set the sales charts ablaze, and pairs great styling, interior space & features with stellar sipping habits to make it to the most fuel-efficient cars list with a 25.17 km/l ARAI certified mileage figure.

Mahindra KUV100: Mahindra blurred the lines between hatchback & SUV with their KUV100, and in doing so, gave buyers the chance to go beyond conventional thought. It’s a good thing then to see the baby Mahindra return a claimed 25.32 km/l figure. Not bad at all for a 6-seater eh!

Ford Figo: The Ford Figo went sub-4 metre sedan in its latest iteration as the Ford Figo Aspire. With 99bhp under the hood & a claimed figure of 25.83 km/l, the Aspire is one accomplished compact sedan, to proudly wear the blue-oval badge.
