Tata Safari has been discontinued in 2020. We are showing the last known price for Safari.
Tata Safari Storme happens to be complete overhaul of its erstwhile model Safari. The car comes at a base price of Rs. 9.8 lac (ex-Showroom), and features a 2.2-liter VTT VARICOR engine, which churns out a maximum power of 148 bhp with peak torque of 320 Nm. It is believed that Safari Storme was introduced in a bid to review the falling sales. The overall structure and chassis of the new Safari remains same, but few of its styling aspects like bumper and radiator grille are modified. However, Tata Motors has made no changes in the trim levels of Safari line-up and continues to offer it in four variants namely LX, EX, VX and VX 4WD.
Further to this, read Tata Safari Storme Road Test details by our expert.
Exterior
The design of Safari Storme has received some significant updates, while its structure remains identical to the erstwhile model. The radiator grille has got refinements, which has been inspired from the design of Jaguar Land Rover. The moniker of Tata Motors is placed at the centre of this grille. The headlamp cluster gets new projector lights with 'Polly Ellopsoid System', which sets it apart from the earlier version. Similar to the upper grille, the air dam at the front bumper also received a new design. Except these changes, all other aspects of the front fascia remain identical to the outgoing model.
The new model has got body colored outer rear view mirrors while the top-end versions have them in chrome painted. Safari Storme has got traditional designing aspects like side claddings, B-pillar styling tape and roof rails. Except for the VX variant, the other two trims feature a set of steel rims with full wheel caps. Its rear portion also exudes stylish look, all thanks to the spoiler. The taillight cluster features halogen-based lamps, including brake lights, turn indicators and courtesy lamps.
Interior
At interiors, the car gets some reworks like Java black color scheme, highlighted by warm silver accents provided on dashboard and door handles. The company has mainly focused over enhancing the comfort of passengers by adding some new features. The new Tata Safari Storme has ultrasonic parking sensors that assist the driver in safely parking the vehicle using the advanced CONNECTNEXT infotainment screen. Along with, there is signature three-spoke steering wheel, which features multi-functional switches for controlling music system and call operations. In the new Safari Storme, remote central locking with flip key is offered as a standard feature across all the variants.
Engine and Transmission
Tata Safari Storme is provided with a new engine that has enhanced its overall efficiency and output. The car comes equipped with the same 2.2-litre VARICOR diesel engine, which now churns out a maximum power of 148 bhp. In order to offer a smooth shift between the gears, the company has incorporated a new 260 mm diameter self adjusting clutch in its new car.
Performance and Handling
Safari Storme comes equipped with a powerful braking and suspension mechanism. The front axle features an independent double wishbone suspension type, including shock absorbers and coil springs, while the rear axle has 5-link type of suspension.
Braking System
No changes are made in the suspension or braking mechanism. Except the base variant, all other trims come equipped with disc braking system. The 4x4 version features Electric Shift on Fly (ESOF) mode wherein it becomes very easy for the driver in dealing with rugged roads and difficult terrains. For efficient braking, Safari Storme features vacuum assisted hydraulic brake system.
Mileage
The 2179 cc Diesel - powered variant delivers a fuel economy of 12 kmpl in city and 14 kmpl on highways.
Safety Features
The new Safari Storme is bestowed with a new generation Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) 8.1 with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD). Both of these functions together enhances the braking mechanism and handling and thus provides a hassle-free driving experience. As a part of enhanced safety level, the VX (both 4x2 and 4x4) version features dual front airbags. However, engine immobilizer and side impact beams are offered as a part of standard features across for all trim levels.
Verdict
Tata Safari Storme has power adjusted steering wheel, making the driving conditions easy and much responsive for the driver. With a turning radius of 6 meters, Safari Storme is not like those gigantic SUVs which were difficult to maneuver in busty city conditions. Along with, the new model has an added ground clearance than its previous generation sibling, which makes it more reliable vehicle to trek the Indian terrains.
Competition
Tata Safari Storme has been strategically placed against Mahindra Scorpio and Toyota Innova. All these models are placed in the same segment and deliver stiff competition to each other.
Pros
Spacious interiors
Advanced safety features
Top-end trim has AWD system
New exteriors are impressive
Enhanced engine performance
After sales service is reasonable

Pathetic car!

What Can Improve
Everything
I am a Tata Safari owner since 2013. It has been the worst mistake I have made in my life. The vehicle has been to the workshop over 50 times in less than 30 months with repairs under warranty to the tune of Rs 2 lacs. I must have lost my sanity temporarily when I chose to buy this car. I would not recommend this car to even my worst enemy. After sale service is pathetic as well. STAY AWAY. PERIOD!
ITS Front seats comfortable. Mileage on long runs is just amazing. City mileage above average. Engine smooth and vibration free. Acceleration, once you cross 2000 rpm is incredible. You can overtake most cars, if you are an expert on Indian roads. Air-con performance is quite good. Electrically operated side view mirrors, good for safety, besides convenience. On good toll roads you can average 90 kms in one hour. I generally drive fast and do not look for exceptional mileage, at that speed.
What Can Improve
As the saying goes...."you can not have the cake and eat it too"....You want excise concession, you get a small boot. If you can pay, there definitely are, better cars, though much more expensive than your Dzire. And, believe me, certainly, not value for money. Though boot size is not a problem for my family, I find the body panels and certain plastic parts, flimsy, and can break, just with an accidental hit to a stray dog or cat at speeds above 60 kmph. The hump in the middle of the rear seat floor makes travel uncomfortable for the fifth passenger, though I am quite sure that no one is going to stuff this car with too many passengers. Suspension can improve mainly because I have some very rough stretches to traverse and have to slow down and negotiate carefully. But, this may not be the case with many others in the top metros of our country, where the road quality is much superior. The front bumpers are quite low and this can result in damage to the under belly of the bumpers if you are not careful on rough stretches.

Whats Good
Excellent looks, cabin space, commanding driving position, good engine, excellent suspension and turning radius (for the huge size), king of the road feel, excellent cruise on the highways... Complete value for money considering SUVs smaller and less capable are more expensive.
Personally I have driven fortuner, pajero sport, endeavour and the storme is equally capable and comparable. In fact the cabin space and driving position of the storme felt the best. The others are priced higher primarily due to the imported component in them! Just to give a fair comparison the storme costs about 25 lacs + in all countries it's exported to..... Tata needs to market this winner a lot better to make people realise the potential option.
What Can Improve
1. I just want to see more gizmos like steering mounted controls, better integrated screen in dash gps, cruise control, reverse sensors as standard for all variants
2. Also some fitments can be better for better insulation and quieter cabin
3. General vibration levels can be improved especially in the gear stick
I would just like any one who is considering and SUV in this price segment, to go and test drive this beast, it surely will impress you! Put it to test TODAY!
While everything else about the car is good/ great, I must express my extreme disappointment with my new Safari Storme which takes pride in being a tough SUV. However, far from being tough, I have had to deal with several quality issues within just the first two weeks of ownership (1,500 kms). Just to name a few, each day I have had to face some issue or the other:
Cigarette lighter comes off from its socket/ Front driver side door window comes off and wouldn’t close/ Left door search light has fallen off/ Second row seats won’t lock and makes rattling noise. The seats would not align in line as well./ Rear view mirror has a distorted view in night view mode./ The front left door loses alignment and creates a popping sound when closing the door. It has resulted in damaging the door edge./ Front left fender not clip broken./ Front and rear wiper motors makes sound./ Rear wiper squeaks./ Rear fuel lid inside panel clips broken on both sides.
With just 1500 kms, this tough SUV rattles/ clatters in several places already (Dashboard, doors, seats, seat belt pulley, indicator switch etc.)
I have bought an extended warranty for the fourth year. However, I am wondering with the way things are falling apart, will the tough car last that long?
Buy only if you are ready to deal with the above issues.
