A new model from the Fiat stable, the 500 L is expected to be launched sometime in 2013. Fiat has managed to combine the versatility of an MPV (Multi Purpose Vehicle) with the design of a hatchback from the front. The vehicle has been built on the concept of 'space efficiency', due to the MPV-like space and a seating capacity of 5 passengers. It is the first major makeover for the Fiat 500, since its launch, possibly doing the same thing that the Countryman did for BMW Mini.

Built on a modified Punto platform and being 7 cms longer than the same, it can accommodate 5 tall adults with ease. The 500 L provides the best passenger volume index in this segment, as passengers get a total of 3.17 cubic meters, after adding the front and rear volumes. It is also large in terms in terms of functionality, as there can be 1500 different interior configurations.

Rear seats of the 500 L slide back and forth, for generating extra legroom or luggage area, and can also fold and flip forward by touching of a lever. One can also fold the front passenger seat into a flat position, for long objects. It is possible to adjust the luggage compartment floor as per three different levels. Therefore, it can be said that the letter L has been aptly added to the name for signifying 'Large'.

As is mentioned above, it offers substantial space by combining characteristics from the B and C segment saloons. Though the vehicle seems to very well suited to Indian conditions, the only problem could be its price.

The 500 L will be available with three engine variants- 2 petrol ones (109 bhp TwinAir 875 cc and 95 bhp 1400 cc) and a diesel engine (85 bhp 1300 cc). Being a CBU makes it more of a luxury, but if it could be manufactured locally in India, this vehicle is sure to work wonders for Fiat.
