      Which Car to Buy? Recollection of Delhi Auto Expo 2010

      The Delhi Auto Expo 2010 has been a gala affair and after the Auto Expo probable car buyers have set their eyes on the automobile they would want. Most of them have set their plans for the new models hitting Indian roads this year. While Chevrolet Beat has already set the ball rolling, with models like VW Polo and Nissan Micra coming up, the market is all set to blaze.

      Here is a review of all the models either coming up in India in next two years or are lined up in product portfolio of automakers, as announced during the AutoExpo.

      Maruti Suzuki India Limited

      Maruti introduced its multi-purpose vehicle – Eeco, which will replace Versa in the Indian market. The car has been designed in-house by Maruti engineers and is priced at Rs. 2.59 lakh and above.

      Maruti also revealed its much awaited luxury sedan model Kizashi, that will hit the Indian market by December this year. It will be powered by a 2.4 litre engine which produces 174 PS power and 230 NM of torque, the same engine doing duty on the Vitara.

      Another star attraction at the Maruti pavilion was SX4 hybrid and hatchback version. Maruti will futher introduce upgraded models of its existing product line which includes Alto Xcite, Wagon R Traveller, the new Ritz and Maruti Swift.

      Hyundai Motors India Limited

      Hyundai’s pavilion was perhaps the most sought venue with celebrity attraction of Shah Rukh Khan who unveiled the new Hyundai i10 Electric with 49kW electric motor with capacity to store electricity in its 16 kWh lithium-ion battery pack - the same type of battery powering our cell-phones and other electronic devices. Hyundai also displayed Genesiz Coupe sports model with rear wheel drive.

      Hyundai also displayed its futuristic technology with its Hyundai i-Mode Concept model. It showcased H1 Wagon which is 3 row 8-seater complete family passenger car.

      Hyundai pavilion rocked with its complete range of existing product line up like Santro, i10, i20, Sonata et al.

      Toyota Kirloskar Motors

      Toyota Etios and Toyota Prius were the show stealers at the Auto Show. While one is here to generate volumes, another one is here to change the course of buying preferences in India. Toyota introduced its small car model Etios at the Delhi Auto Show. The company will introduce its hatchback as well as sedan model in India. The hatchback model showcased at the auto show was a 100% production ready model that will be available in the market in 2011. Toyota Etios hatchback will come with 1.2L engine while the sedan model will be powered by 1.5L petrol engine.

      Toyota introduced its hybrid model – Prius which has received enthusiastic response from Indian buyers looking for more fuel efficient models and futuristic technology. It is the third generation model powered by 1.8 litre petrol engine and a battery of 60 kilowatt and it will have three driving mode — power mode, eco mode and electric vehicle mode (battery).

      General Motors

      Chevrolet Beat was launched just a day prior to start of the Delhi Auto Expo. The car has already received rave reviews ever since it was launched and is one of the hottest selling brands right now. The car is definitely what every price conscious Indian buyer was asking for.

      Chevrolet also launched its electric car models Chevy Volt and Chevy Spark. Chevrolet Spark will be introduced in the Indian market in the last quarter of the current calendar year.

      General Motors showcased the Chevrolet Spark LPG model, Aveo U-VA and its CNG variant, Chevy Cruze and its sports model. Other models on display at the General Motors pavilion were Captiva Xtreme and Optra Magnum.

      Audi

      Audi displayed the new A7 and Q7 models at the Delhi Auto Expo. Audi A7 is the new sedan model based on A6 platform while Q7 SUV is already present in the Indian market. Audi introduced the diesel variant of Q7 in the Indian market at the Delhi Auto Expo.

      BMW

      BMW unveiled its three new brands at the auto show. BMW Gran Turismo, X6M and BMW 760Li models were all on grand display at the Audi pavilion. 100 units of limited edition BMW Gran Turismo models will be on sale in India this year priced at Rs. 63 lakh while BMW X6M will be priced at Rs. 1.3 crore and BMW 760Li at Rs. 1 crore.

      Honda Siel Cars India Limited

      Honda introduced its “Small Car” concept especially designed for emerging markets. The model is still code-named as “India-specific Small Car” and will go on sale in India and Thailand initially in 2011.

      Honda also displayed new models of Honda Jazz with theme as “Why So Serious.” The models on display were the Holiday Jazz, the Music Jazz and the Sports Jazz where their exteriors and interiors depicted their respective themes.

      A new Honda Civic with upgraded interiors was on display which will be available in India later this year. Other upgraded models were Honda City, Honda Accord V6 and Honda CRV.

      Volkswagen

      Volkswagen introduced its new small car model VW Polo which will be available in the market from first week of March. The company will introduce the hatchback model initially and later in the year a sedan model will also be available. VW displayed Polo and Polo Cup model that will compete at the upcoming Volkswagen Cup to be held in June 2010.

      Volkswagen Beetle was introduced last year and remained impressive while on display at the Auto Show. VW also displayed its sedan models like Phaeton, Jetta and Passat in India. VW will bring its new SUV model Touareg in India this year which was also on display at the Auto Show.

      Fiat

      Fiat India Automobiles Limited displayed the new Linea T-Jet model that will go on sale in India powered by a more powerful 1.4L 'FIRE' engine which delivers an output of 110 PS. It also displayed the Linea Dualogic or the automatic variant of Fiat Linea but it will take a while before it actually comes into the showrooms here.

      Fiat also displayed the CNG variant of Grand Punto and the sports model Fiat Grand Punto Sport along with its premium model Fiat 500 that already exists in the Indian market.

      Renault

      Renault will introduce its new small car and sedan model in India this year. Some of the models that were on display were Renault Fluence, Renault Megane, Renault Laguna and Renault Koleos. All three models will mark Renault’s independent entry in the Indian market in the sedan segment. While Fluence is expected to compete fiercely with price and looks, Megane and Laguna Coupes are stunning beauties that have been hot selling models from the French auto maker.

      Renault also displayed its futuristic concept car Twizzy ZE and Formula 1 Sports model of Renault Megane.

      Tata Motors

      Tata Motors unveiled its three new car models, Tata Aria, Tata Venture and Magic IRIS at the Auto Show. While Tata Aria is the first four wheel drive cross over vehicle, Tata Magic IRIS and Venture are more suited for urban traffic and are great multi-purpose passenger vehicles.

      Tata Motors also displayed the Indica Vista Electric model which showcased Tata’s venture into the alternative fuel technology. Other models on display at the Tata pavilion were the Tata Sumo Grand MK II, Tata Xenon XT, Tata Prima which is the latest luxury saloon designed by Italian car design studio Pinanfarina.

      Tata Motors also displayed the latest Jaguar model XJ for the Indian market.

      Skoda

      Skoda introduced its new SUV model Yeti for the Indian market. It will be the new SUV coming to India later this year from Skoda stable. Skoda also displayed the new models of Skoda Superb Combi and Skoda Laura RS along with regular Fabia model and newest Skoda Fabia Greenline variant.

      Mercedes

      Mercedes displayed a strong line of product portfolio for the Indian market. It introduced New C, E and S Class models in India. There were also the Mercedes ML and recently launched GL SUV models on display at the Mercedes pavilion. The new E 350 Coupe in shining white revealed the classy looks of the model while Mercedes SLS AMG classic and gull-wing model were the show stealers. The models will be available in the Indian market very soon. Mercedes had also put their Luxury Bus and a model of their BlueEfficiency Diesel Engine.

      Mahindra

      Mahindra and Mahindra launched their new 25 tonne and 31 tonne Navistar trucks earlier and at the Auto Expo it unveiled two new variants of the model – MN 49 and MN 40 trucks. Both the trucks are powered by MaxxForce® 7.2 litre CRDI engine which is the most powerful engine in its class.

      The engine features both, a mechanical injection system with a Bosch Rotary pump, as well as a high-pressure 1800 bar common-rail fuel injection system.

      All in all, the AutoExpo 2010 has been a Stunning Affair and we look forward to the next edition. Surely, this edition has excited the minds of car lovers and owners alike!
