Reports confirm that Volvo is in the process of trademarking the S50 badge. There has already been some talk about the brand looking to this model as a new sportscar by the performance division ‘Polestar’. Although this could turn out to be a bespoke coupe model with close to 600bhp under the hood, there has been no confirmation yet from the car maker.

The other possibility is that the S50 may end up as four-door coupe model of the upcoming S40(concept pictured above). It wouldn’t be the first time this has happened, since brands like Audi have come up with cars like the A5 Sportback, which is basically a sportier version of the A4.

If this is true, and with the S40 headed to global markets in the last quarter of 2018, it is possible that the S50 can make an international debut sometime in 2019. We can also expect the S50 to be substantially pricier than the regular S40.

When a car maker blocks a nameplate, it doesn’t always end up with an intention to launcha new car in the near future. We’ve seen quite a few instances where companies just block names to prevent rivals from using them. For now, Volvo seems busy, teasing and preparing its XC40 compact crossover for an upcoming debut.
