The Polo hatchback from Volkswagen has been a popular choice in the hatchback segment. Sources have revealed that the German automaker is likely to to launch the new Polo GTi in India with a six-speed manual gearbox. The upcoming model has also been spotted on-test on Indian roads, thereby hinting on a possible launch sometime soon. The new model could likely be slightly bigger and offered with more features than the existing trims in the country.
The Polo GTi serving the international markets gets a 1.8-litre, TSI petrol engine mated to 6-speed manual and optional 7-speed DSG gearbox effectively generates a powerful 189bhp. Internationally, it reportedly clocks a 0-100km/h in just about seven seconds. In India, however it could get a toned down version 1.8-litre turbo petrol engine that may generate about 168bhp of power. More details about the vehicle may be known in the coming days. Post launch it could emerge as a strong competitor against the recently launched Fiat Abarth Punto in India. Owing to its impressive performance numbers it could command a premium price over the current generation.
