The long-wheelbase version of the Volkswagen Tiguan has been unveiled at the 2017 Detroit Motor Show. The vehicle’s debut kicks off a big year for the troubled Volkswagen brand in America.
VW says it has designed this stretched version specifically for American buyers. It builds on the standard Tiguan’s practical nature and adds a more spacious interior. As with the Atlas, the Tiguan is based on Volkswagen’s Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB) architecture. Compared with the current model, the new Tiguan has far more interior space; at 185 inches long, the new model is a 10.7 inches longer than the current version. The 110-inch wheelbase which is 4.4 inches longer than the new Tiguan sold in Europ, provides both sliding second-row seats and an optional third row.
The Tiguan range will be powered by an updated version of Volkswagen’s 2-liter turbocharged and direct- injection TSI engine, making 184bhp and driving the front wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. An all-wheel-drive system will be offered as an option.
Volkswagen India will launch the standard Tiguan later in the year. The brand has confirmed that the standard 5-seater model will be introduced as a locally assembled vehicle. It will compete with the recently introduced Hyundai Tucson.
