Volkswagen has showcased a new track-specific Golf GTI TCR. Only 20 units of this car with the 2.0-litre engine will be produced to participate in the 2016 Touring Car Racing championship.

The new model is based on the standard Golf GTI, but is heavily modified for racing. It has large air intakes with additional ducts and scoops, dedicated aero package, lower ride height and a massive rear wing for extra down force. The TCR is also wider than the standard hatchback with more pronounced wheel arches.

Under the hood is the 2.0-litre petrol unit producing 325bhp and 402Nm. That is a lot of power for a front-wheel driven car and VW has added multi-plate differential for better power delivery. Volkswagen claims that the TCR gets to 100kmph in 5.2 seconds with the six-speed sequential gearbox.

The interior of the TCR has been stripped and fitted with racing equipment. It has a bolted bucket seat, complete with five-point harness. For safety, the car gets a roll cage and FIA-spec fuel tank. Only 20 units of the Golf GTI TCR are being produced and all of them are already sold to various customer racing teams.
