In an attempt to move away from the infamous dieselgate, Volkswagen has shifted its focus on electric vehicles. Having showcased the two vehicles of the I.D. family at Paris and Detroit Motor shows, Volkswagen will introduce the GTi moniker which will lead the charge of the I.D. family.

Volkswagen to electrify its GTi cars by 2020

Images of the new hatchback, expected to be called I.D GTI, have surfaced and it looks like the best of what the automaker has achieved till date and the start of where it will go from here. The vehicle in the photos is a Golf-sized car and sports the familiar red stripes of the GTI brand but with the headlamp design, face and wheels of the new MEB underpinned I.D model. We can see that it sits low to the ground and will be proper five-seater with a big boot.

The new MEB underpinning means this is expected to spawn multiple body styles, sizes and drive options (FWD as well as AWD is expected to be on the cards). What makes this car so interesting is the fact that it predicts the future of hot hatches and give us an indication of where performance motoring will be in the future.

It may have taken the wrongful actions of one big manufacturer to finally bring electric power to the forefront but is better late than never. Like the first GTI set the standard for what to expect of hot hatchbacks, this I.D GTI will be expected to do no less in the modern era.
