The 1.4 litre TSI petrol engine of the German auto maker, Volkswagen has been titled with the 'Best New Engine of the Year Award' for seventh time in a row in the 1.0 to 1.4 litre category. With this award, the 1.4 litre TSI engine of Volkswagen has been termed as the most successful powertrain in the international engine technology competition in the history of 1.5 decades. The company has been provided with the 'Best New Engine Award' for its TSI technology, equipped with Automatic Cylinder Deactivation (ACT). Interestingly, this title recognises the development of best engine in the past 1 year.
Volkswagen has received 12 trophies from the jury of 'Engine of the Year' since 2006 for constantly improving 1.4 litre TSI engine. The 12 trophies offered to the auto maker includes seven class victories, two 'Best New Engine' awards, two overall victories and one 'Green Engine of the Year' award. The jury, which includes 87 international trade journalists, has provided a historic string of victories to the TSI technology. Meanwhile, the auto maker is looking ahead to introduce a new era of engines with its latest innovative technology, named as TSI with ACT cylinder deactivation.
It must be noted that Volkswagen is said to be the first auto maker in the world to introduce ACT technology in the TSI engine, last year. This innovation was first incorporated in the Polo and Golf 140PS 1.4 TSI. Interestingly, with this technology, the second and third cylinders temporary shuts down, resulting to an economical style of driving and less fuel consumption by more than 0.5 litres per every 100 km.
In every TSI engine, the CO2 emission valves and fuel consumption are reduced to 9 per cent with the help of several measures like lowering weight, reducing friction and optimising thermal management. Volkswagen has been globally spearheading the charging strategies for drivetrains with direct fuel injection. As of now, the auto maker has rolled out more than 3.8 million TSI engines through its five production units based globally.
