Volkswagen has introduced three electric vehicle concepts so far under the ID banner. The ID family is set to grow with two electric sedans added to its stables by the year 2020, all sharing the same MEB platform.

Volkswagen plans two electric sedans under ID family

According to the leaked image, Volkswagen plans to introduce the new electric products for the global market by the year 2022. They have been currently named as ID Lounge and I.D. AEROe. ID Lounge, visible only as an outline, seems to be more of a station wagon rather than a three-box sedan while the latter appears to be a mid-size sporty sedan like the VW CC or the Audi A7. However, both these new EVs will be exclusively sold in the U.S. and China only.

The ID electric sedans will be based on the same MEB platform like the other ID vehicles. The MEB architecture was tailor-made for the electric vehicles by Volkswagen and will be seen underpinning all the electric cars falling under the Volkswagen umbrella. The MEB platform is quite favourable for the EVs, pointed out the carmaker, since it provides a compact electric powertrain with either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive layout. The cabin space is boosted as well, thus providing a larger volume on the inside in a relatively smaller car. The range promised is also in excess of 500 kilometres.

The first production version of the ID EV will hit the road as early as 2019 beginning with the ID hatchback. The ID Cross will follow soon after as will the two new speculated EVs. The ID Buzz will be the last to go into production. The onslaught of the electric vehicles is a part of Volkswagen’s grand scheme to introduce 30 or more electric vehicles and it hopes to sell one million (10 lakh) electric vehicles by the year 2025.
