As per fresh updates from sources, German automaker Volkswagen plans to locally produce a new-generation of 2.0-litre diesel engine some time later this year in an attempt to reduce the overall cost. Until now, the company has only been producing a 1.5-litre diesel engine from its Chakan facility in Pune. The EA288 engine is indeed the second one to be produced from this plant. Speaking more on the occasion to sources, Andreas Lauermann, president and managing director, Volkswagen India said to sources, We are continuing with strong localisation which you can see in our compact sedan and we will be localising the new EA288 (2.0-litre diesel) engine this year. This is a very modern engine which powers a wide range of our cars so it’s very logical that we are doing this.”

Among the current lot, the Audi A3 sedan and Skoda Octavia come with 2.0-litre EA288 engine in India. While in future, it could be introduced in Audi A6, Skoda SUVs, Skoda Superb, VW Passat, Audi Q2 and the A4. Moreover, the new-gen engine would comply with BS-VI norms that would be implemented by 2020. More details in this regard may emerge at a later date.
