      Volkswagen I.D. Concept to be showcased at the Detroit Motor Show

      Volkswagen has teased its second I.D. vehicle ahead of its debut at the upcoming 2017 Detroit Motor Show.

      The first I.D. Concept was showcased at the 2016 Paris Motor Show. That car was a hatchback, but this vehicle is speculated to be a spiritual successor to the iconic Volkswagen Microbus. Volkswagen says that this vehicle will be a link between Volkswagen’s legendary origin and its electric future, the car will be – a multifunctional vehicle of a new era. This new I.D. vehicle is proposed to go into production only by 2019.

      The upcoming EV will be based on the same Modular Electric Drive Kit (MEB) platform. This platform is specifically developed by Volkswagen for its future electric vehicles. The only information revealed by manufacturer about the powertrain is that the car will incorporate two electric motors and an all-wheel-drive system. On the inside, this future EV promises to have a multi-functional and flexible interior. Volkswagen also said that the new I.D. EV will have the autonomous tech in the future as well. By pressing the company’s logo on the steering, the steering will retract into the cockpit as the car will be transformed into a self-driving vehicle, using laser scanners, ultrasonic and radar sensors and cameras to monitor other road users and the surroundings.

      Volkswagen intends to turns its attention to electric vehicles after the infamous diesel gate. The I.D. EVs are a part of Volkswagen’s plans to introduce 30 or more electric vehicles and anticipates to sell one million (10 lakh) electric vehicles by the year 2025.
