Now in its second generation, D+ segment SUV has been spotted on many occasions on the Indian roads, indicating that a launch is just around the corner. Volkswagen recently announced three new additions to its Indian line-up, and the Tiguan SUV is likely to be the first model to be launched this year.

Based on the versatile MQB platform, the Tiguan will share the production line with the same platform-based cars like the Audi A4, Skoda Superb and Laura, along with the upcoming VW Passat and the Skoda Kodiaq. The Tiguan will be powered by a 2.0-litre TDI engine, from the recently launched A4 35TDI, producing 147bhp of power and 340Nm of torque. A 2.0-litre gasoline option is also on the cards. However, both variants may be offered only with a seven-speed DSG. The second-generation Tiguan is 50kg lighter than its predecessor and slightly bigger as well, providing more cabin space. It will get ABS and multiple airbags as standard at the time of launch. Other features would include halogen headlamps, DRLs, roof rails, 17-inche alloy wheels, and LED tail lamps. On the inside, there will be an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity, satellite navigation, and an upmarket upholstery.

Michael Mayer, director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars India, commenting on the occasion, said, “We are delighted to introduce one of our most successful global products to the Indian market. The Tiguan will be our premium SUV offering for India and will cater to the unceasing demand in the segment. Our customers will now have an extended portfolio, ranging from hatchback to executive sedan, to meet their requirements at our showrooms.”
