Nonetheless, the upcoming gen of the 5 Series will feature BMW’s current design trends like the headlights which merge into the kidney grille and a more muscular looking bodywork. The taillights will also be redesigned and made to look sleeker and longer than the current F10 generation car.

The entire range will be built using BMW’s next-gen platform called “35up” that will bring lightweight materials and construction to mass production cars. Inside, the redesigned dashboard will get a free-standing LCD display and a variety of premium features including gesture-based controls from the 7 Series.

In terms of engines, BMW will group 500-cc cylinders together to create three, four and six cylinder engines with 60 per cent common parts. The range will comprise of a number of powerful yet efficient petrol and diesel engines options.

The next-gen 5 Series will go on sale sometime later this year or early next year. It will continue to compete with similarly priced cars like the Mercedes E-Class, Audi A6 and the Jaguar XF in the premium executive sedan segment.
