Citing failing to fall short of expectations, Tata JLR staff in UK have rejected a pay hike offer made by the company. This situation indicates on a possibility for a strike by the staff of the company. The company however believes that the pension package and pay rise offered was generous given the current market situation. Talks may however be held between the company and staff to avoid a strike situation.
Britain's largest workers' union, Unite, has stated that in over three years about 96% of its members had voted to reject pay increases worth around 14%. Speaking more on the occasion Roger Maddison, official of Unite, said, “With the company making a staggering 10 million pounds profit a day, it is no surprise that the workforce is angered by pension cuts and a pay offer that falls short in recognizing their role in that success. JLR needs to get back around the negotiating table and hammer out a deal that meets the work-force's expectations and shares the rewards of the company's success fairly. Otherwise we will be looking to ballot our members for industrial action across the company's five sites.”
The union has stated that about 12,881 union members had voted to reject the pay offer. A statement released by the company in this regard stated that the group is committed to reach a negotiated settlement. The statement added, “Jaguar Land Rover is disappointed that the trade unions have voted to reject its pay and conditions offer which represents a pay rise worth 7.7 per cent for a typical production operator in year one and a 14.1 per cent increase over the three-year period of the deal.”
