Toyota and Subaru have been developing a new coupe behind closed doors since long. Now Toyota has revealed the first pictures and details about the new RWD coupe which is a rear-wheel drive sports model. The car will be showcased at the upcoming Tokya Auto Show 2009 on October 21.
The car will go on sale in late 2011 and both the companies will sell their own version of the new model that will be powered by Subaru’s naturally aspirate 2.0L flat four that is currently being used in Impreza. The current engine produces 146bhp and 141lb ft of torque, but the new engine could go up to 160bhp, with lower CO2 emissions. A turbo would increase performance but would also increase the price.
Toyota’s version of this car is christened as FT-86 and is quite similar to proposed car production. Toyota intends to enhance its product line appeal with this new model which has been lost its charm after phasing out of Celica and MR2. Moreover, this new project will also enable Toyota to regain its brand image amidst young Japanese drivers. Although the current price of this car is GBP 14000 or Rs. 10.64 lakh but it can easily escalate up to GBP 18,000 or Rs. 13.68 lakh.
