Toyota Kirloskar Motor, a fully owned subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corporation, could be looking at launching new hybrid vehicles in the country soon. At present, the only hybrid vehicle in India is the Toyota Prius, which is priced between Rs. 29.3 lakh and Rs. 31.4 lakh. As part of a global initiative, the company may be looking to launch 18 new vehicles across the world by year 2015. It is likely that such hybrid vehicles could be assembled in India, based on their demand and popularity is other countries.

Commenting on Toyota's future, a spokesperson from Toyota Motor Corporation in Japan said, “We have already introduced the Prius to Indian market and we will continue to study the Indian market to introduce new hybrid models in India at appropriate times.” About the possible assembly of hybrids at Toyota manufacturing plants in India, he said, “Depending on the future market dynamics, we will study and take a decision accordingly.” The spokesperson provided no information on the possibility of producing Completely Knocked Down (CKD) versions of hybrid vehicles. Further, on the global perspective, the spokesperson said, “We plan to introduce 18 new hybrid models by the end of 2015. We expect global sales of these additional hybrid vehicles to be at least one million (10 lakh) units a year from 2013 to 2015."

Globally, Toyota Motor Corporation has breached the milestone of 50 lakh hybrid vehicles by March 31, 2013. Its first hybrid car was launched as far back as 1997 and today, the sales of such vehicles stand at 51.25 lakh units. Toyota sells its hybrid vehicle range across 80 countries in the world, which comprises 19 models at the moment. Out of these, 13 are manufactured by Toyota and 6 are from Lexus, apart from a plug-in hybrid model.

It is heartening to see that an automobile manufacturer conscious about environmental pollution is making efforts towards creation of hybrid vehicles. Currently, 14 per cent of Toyota's global sales are made by hybrid vehicles. Experts believe that other popular hybrid cars, such as Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf, along with Toyota Prius, are sure to shape the future of mobility in the world.
