The new second generation Toyota Fortuner has scored a five star rating in the recently conducted Latin NCAP crash test. The Fortuner is based on the Hilux pick-up that also scored the maximum five star rating last year. The Hilux had reportedly performed well in adult and child protection parameters, while the new Fortuner performs even better in some biomechanical aspects.
The new Fortuner is available in Indonesia, Australia, Argentina, Thailand, South Africa and Philippines. In India however, it will not come this year but will be launched next year. The international spec model comes loaded with safety features like ABS with EBD, seven SRS airbags, vehicle stability control, 3-point seat belts with emergency locking retractors (ELR), trailer sway control (TSC) reversing camera, downhill assist control, brake assist and emergency stop signal.
The India-bound model is expected to be powered by a 2.8-litre diesel engine that generates about 177bhp of power. It will be offered in six-speed manual and automatic transmission options. It is also believed that a 2.4-litre diesel might also be offered in the Indian market. In terms of features we can expect push start and stop, keyless entry, ABS with EBD, touchscreen infotainment system with satellite navigation, cruise control, multiple airbags, rain sensing wipers, leather seats and reverse parking camera. We anticipate that the India-bound 2017 Toyota Fortuner will be priced between Rs 25 - Rs 30 lakhs. It will compete against the likes of the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, Ford Endeavour and Hyundai Santa Fe.
