Top B segment hatchbacks under Rs 9 lakhs with the most boot space

The mid-level B-segment hatchback family is one of the biggest in the country today. A majority of car buying in India happens in this part of the market as these cars sit in a position where they are not too low priced or high priced like the vehicles below and above them. But they offer enough value to be a good mix of everything.

Fiat Punto Evo - Top Car With Best Ground Clearance In India

In this edition of the deep-dive segment, we’ve decided to look at the boot space among the major competitors in this segment. We have taken vehicles that have a starting price of around Rs 5 lakhs but top out anywhere close to the Rs 9 lakh (ex-showroom) bracket. This excludes the entry-level B-segment cars like the Celerio and Tiago as well as vehicles like the Jazz and Baleno. The latter is because we have already done that story and you can read about that here.

      Hyundai Grand i10- 256-litres
The second most popular hatchback in the segment seems to have the 5th smallest boot capacity. At 256-litres, it isn’t what you would call small but compared to the rest, the Grand i10’s boot is small and this, even with the fact that the car sold in India is a longer version of the Euro spec car.

      Ford Figo- 257-litres
Coming just marginally ahead of the Grand i10 is the Ford Figo. Actually, to be honest, the difference between the both the cars in terms of overall boot space would be almost impossible for us to quantify. We would have to look into the deeper aspects of both boots and that is a story for another day.

      Maruti Suzuki Ignis- 260-litres
Maruti’s bug-eyed boy has claimed third place on this list. Its added capacity over the other cars is, we feel, down to the fact that the Ignis is a tall boy, thus giving more room at the rear. However, the car has not done too well in terms of numbers, a part of which is likely due to its polarising looks.

      Maruti Suzuki Swift- 268-litres
Coming in one above the Ignis is its elder sibling- the Swift. It is now built on a new platform that has allowed it to become bigger across all dimensions, thus affording more boot space over the older vehicle. You get 268-litres which is now considered the acceptable amount in this segment.

      Fiat Punto EVO- 280-litres
The car with the biggest boot in this comparison is one that’s been out of the new for a long time. At 280-litres, the Punto Evo’s boot is massive compared to the rest but (and this is a big one) there’s a good reason for that. This is because the EVO is a much bigger car than the rest and at one point of time, it was a whole segment above the other cars in this fray. However, it is now priced lower putting it in direct contention with these vehicles.

Could not cut the cheese well enough
While the above mentioned cars have topped the list, here are the other vehicles in this part of the market and their boot capacities.
      Etios Liva- 251-litres
      Micra- 251 litres
      KUV 100- 243-litres
      Honda Brio- 175-litres
