Under Rs 5 lakhs:

Renault Kwid: This is the best value for money product one can buy for under Rs 5 lakhs. The Kwid is a revolutionary hatchback in the entry level segment that has changed the game rules itself. The Kwid has rugged looks, ground clearance of 180mm (which is the best in class), best in class boot space and several first-in-class bells and whistles too. The Kwid is powered by a 800cc petrol engine and the top-of-the-line variant gets touchscreen infotainment system with satellite navigation. This is the first time that an entry level car gets all these features.

Between 5-7 lakhs:

Ford Figo: The Ford Figo is the latest entrant in this segment and the American automaker has left no stone unturned. The Ford Figo is a highly affordable option and the best bet if you are looking for a diesel car. If you need an automatic, it is also made available with six-speed dual clutch transmission and at the same time it also has a 1.5-litre petrol engine. The Figo’s Titanium+ variant also gets six airbags, which is the first in its segment to get. In the new launches, the Figo becomes a good option to consider.

Between 8-11 lakhs:

Maruti Baleno: The newest and hottest car in this segment is the Maruti Baleno. Though it is competing with the Elite i20, which has itself become a brand. Baleno has a tough opponent, but Maruti has ticked all the correct boxes with its new premium hatchback. The Baleno is powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine and the other one is the 1.3-litre diesel engine. The new chassis of the Baleno is about 100 kilograms lighter than the competition and this makes it lighter, faster, more fuel efficient and even better driving characteristics. It is also the first in its segment to get daytime running LEDs. The base model of the Baleno even gets dual airbags and ABS as a standard feature.

Honda Jazz: The Honda Jazz is another good offering in this segment against the Maruti Baleno and the Hyundai Elite i20. The Jazz is more powerful option in both petrol and diesel engines, and what makes the Jazz a stronger product is its flexibility for practicality. The Jazz has one of the best in class space for passengers and luggage as well. This makes a strong case for this premium hatchback. It is feature loaded too.

Abarth Punto: If you are looking for a performance hatchback, then this is your best bet. The Abarth Punto comes with a 1.4-litre T-JET engine that produces 145bhp of power and comes mated a five-speed manual transmission. This is the first time, a true hot hatch is being offered for our market. This Punto has the Scorpion logo instead of the red Fiat one, which indicates it is fast! The Punto gets similar interiors to the Fiat Punto Evo, but what makes it different is when you get behind the wheel.
