      Ford Classic, Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire and Honda Amaze are fighting for the title of India’s most fuel efficient entry level sedan at the moment. CarTrade.com takes a look at their claims on the mileage and performance figures.

      Ford India Private Limited, the domestic subsidiary of American multinational car maker Ford Motor Co., offers its Classic sedan within a price band of Rs. 5.7 to 8 lakh in the country. The company claims that the car’s 1.4 litre TDI Duratorq engine delivers mileage figures of 32.38 kmpl on highways and 21.37 kmpl in routine city traffic conditions. Ford Classic is also offered in a petrol guise powered by a 1.6 litre Duratec engine rated with city and highway mileage figures at 10.5 kmpl and 15.3 kmpl, respectively. The 1.6 litre Duratec petrol engine is rated with a peak power close to 100 bhp, whereas the 1.4 litre Duratorq diesel engine churns out 67 bhp of highest power figure.

      Maruti Suzuki India Limited, the country’s largest passenger car maker, has tasted great success with its Swift DZire entry level sedan in the domestic market. Swift DZire remains among the country’s best selling cars at the moment and also contributes a big share to the company’s profit margins. The entry level sedan is offered to domestic buyers between a price bracket of Rs. 4.9 lakhs and Rs. 7.5 lakhs.

      Like Ford Classic, Swift DZire is also offered in both petrol and diesel powered options. The petrol trim is powered by a 1.2 litre, K-Series power-mill that pumps out maximum power and torque figures of 86 bhp and 114 Nm, respectively. The Swift DZire diesel model comes assimilated with a 1.3 litre DDiS oil burner rated with peak power and torque outputs of 74 bhp and 190 Nm, respectively. The petrol version delivers a fuel economy of 19.1 kmpl, whereas the 1.3 litre DDiS diesel is rated with best mileage figure of 23.4 kmpl.

      Honda Cars India Limited, arm of the Japanese car maker Honda Motor Company, has pitched-in its Amaze model to take on Swift DZire in the domestic car market. The stunning Amaze is also a compact sedan like Swift DZire and carries retail values in a range starting from Rs. 5 lakh that goes on till Rs. 7.6 lakh. Honda offers its Amaze line-up in both petrol and diesel powered guises, and claims the diesel trim to be the most fuel efficient sedan in the country.

      Speaking of under-the-hood configuration of Honda Amaze, the sedan’s petrol version is powered with a 1.2 litre i-VTEC engine, whereas its diesel model is driven by a 1.5 litre i-DTEC Honda Earth Dreams oil burner. The i-VTEC motor is rated with maximum power of 87 bhp, whereas the revolutionary i-DTEC churns out 99 bhp of peak power. It must be noted that Honda Amaze diesel is the most fuel efficient sedan in the country at the moment with an ARAI certified mileage figure of 25.8 kmpl. However, Honda Amaze faces an uphill task to eclipse sales recorded by Swift DZire in the Indian auto market.
