Yamaha has been one of the leading names in the production of motorcycles in India since a long time. It is not that the recent models were the only craze for this brand. Yamaha has been in the market for quite a long time. Two of its models, RX100 and RX135 had reached the apex of popularity after their launch and have reached heritage status for this brand. Both these models were runaway hits in the mid-1980s and 1990s and received high reception from the masses.

Yamaha RX100 hit the market in the later part of 1984. It became popular in the country between 1985 and 1987 and these bikes were knock-down kits and were assembled inside the country, itself. However, there was a single change that the bike was provided. It was upgraded to a 12-volt system, which was previously a 6-volt system. It was so popular that the model stayed in production over a decade up to 1996. Several upgrades and modifications were installed in the bike like a 5th gear, disc brakes and ultramodern expansion chambers. However, later the bike was replaced with a number of successor models but the cult status that RX100 received was one of its kind. Almost every alternate person who had a motorcycle had a RX100. High performance was the key factor with consistency.

RX100 was initially replaced by RXG, which had an 11.8 bhp 132 cc engine. However, the model failed to swoon the masses as the ignition system of the bike was malfunctioning. Next into the market was RX135, which was the rechristened version of RXG. This had a two-stroke engine and received immense popularity not only in the nation, but also in the entire South Asian region. It was launched within the nation around the later parts of 1990s decade and was in available till 2005 (factory-shipped version). The bike received huge appreciation and had two variants – the five speed and the four speed.

Both these bikes were a pre-show of the pinnacle that the brand has reached today. The popularity of these models in the decades of their launch and sales was a path-breaking phenomenon. This was the start of bike-loving nation, which would later become the one with the most number of motorcycles produced yearly.
