Tesla has officially unveiled its Gigafactory in the Nevada desert. This new facility when completed in mid-2017 will be the American electric carmaker’s most important facility as it will produce batteries for their range of current and upcoming vehicles.
In his master plan, Musk had revealed that Tesla would eventually be producing compact SUVs, trucks, sedans and even minibuses to assist in public transport.
Elon Musk, founder and CEO, has said that to make their cars more cost-effective and appealing to a larger buyer base, they would need to make one of its most expensive parts much cheaper and this is where this factory comes in. It will produce the Lithium-ion batteries that will power the vehicles.
To give you a scale of Musk’s ambitions with this factory, when completed, it will produce enough batteries to supply 150gigawatts of batteries every year. In model terms, this number equals to the power supply of 500,000 model 3’s.
