The Indian government has been undertaking various measures to control pollution levels in the country. During a recent visit to the Tesla’s manufacturing facility, Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport, Highways and Shipping encouraged the company to set up a manufacturing facility in India. The recent visit focused on the Indian government’s desire to promote electric vehicles. Apart from this, the government is also focusing on introducing eco-friendly fuels.
The minister has promised to provide full support to Tesla Motors in setting up a manufacturing facility in India. The government has also encouraged the company to make India their Asia manufacturing hub. In response to the minister’s request, the electric carmaker said that they will consider the Indian investments depending on the success of the upcoming Tesla Model 3 given the price sensitive factor of the Indian market.
Apart from regular commuter cars, the government has also requested the automaker to enter the commercial vehicle space. Tesla Motors have been successful in making electric vehicles which can cover distances of over 300 kms on a full charge. The Tesla Model 3 has reportedly accumulated about 4,00,000 bookings, some of these from India, since its unveiling in March this year. Till date, this is the cheapest offering from the Tesla line which is priced at $35,000 (about Rs 23 lakh).
