Tata Motors, the country’s largest automobile manufacturer, is working on a diesel powered variant of its Nano entry level small car for the Indian passenger vehicle market. The Nano diesel would come with a bigger engine and is pegged to revive its demand and popularity among the domestic car buyers. The company is also developing a special dual fuel petrol-CNG version of its Nano model, which is expected to be launched soon in the country.

As per initial reports, the yet-to-be launched Tata Nano diesel could come fitted with a 0.8 litre common rail diesel power-mill, which might be a toned down version of the company’s popular DiCOR engine. This 0.8 litre diesel engine is expected be equipped with turbocharge technology and could churn out peak power and torque output equations around 40 bhp and 70 Nm, respectively.

The diesel version of Nano has been in the news for quite some time now, and most industry experts are big supporter of the cause as well. Apart from the diesel model, Tata Motors is also looking at introducing an 800 cc petrol version of the Nano in the country. The Nano facelift is believed to be in pipeline as well, and might be launched this year in India. Therefore, it would be interesting to see if the more powerful diesel and petrol versions of Nano come fitted inside its facelift model.

The petrol Nano has failed to perform as expected in the Indian auto market, which underlines the fact that its diesel version would be really important for Tata Motors. The diesel Nano is expected to carry price tags somewhere around Rs. 2 lakh in the Indian auto market that would make it the cheapest diesel powered passenger car in the country.
