Neeraj Garg, Vice President (VP) of the commercial and passenger car business unit for Tata Motors, has quit the company after a short stint of seven-and-a-half months at the company. Reportedly, Ankush Arora, who joined Tata Motors as Senior VP and Head Strategy will replace Neeraj during the interim period.

On his resignation, Garg has been quoted as saying, “Yes it is true. I have decided to move on from Tata Motors. At this age of my life, I am looking certain entrepreneurial ventures which could be in the automotive or allied businesses. It would have been tough to carry on with the existing profile at Tata Motors.” With different options in front of him, Tata Motors decided to accept his resignation. Garg is a veteran in the Indian automotive industry, having helped companies such as Volkswagen, Nissan and Honda establish base in the country.

Neeraj's stint at the top Indian vehicle manufacturing company was fraught with challenges, since he joined in September 2012. Sales of Tata Motor vehicles have been on the downward spiral ever since he took over. The company's market share slipped from 10.87 per cent in September 2012 to 4.92 per cent during March this year. Further, in terms of passenger vehicles, it came down from 12.78 per cent in September 2012 to 8.75 per cent in March 2013.

When asked about the nature of his role at Tata Motors, Neeraj replied by saying that it was enjoyable but challenging at the same time. He said, “Tata Motors is a huge organisation. Through the years, I have helped companies establish their brands in India, for me the task of turning around the organisation in a complex environment was a challenging and interesting for me.” Tata Motors would be filling up his vacancy with a new person, as the arrangement with Ankush Arora would be a temporary one.
