Until now, Tata Motors was the third largest automaker in India and Hyundai Motors was holding second place since the past few years. Now with the June numbers out, Maruti leads the auto companies as usual, but surprisingly Tata Motors beats Hyundai and holds the second place this time.

All the credit of Tata goes to its small car Nano, of which Tata Motors sold 7704 units in June. The overall growth is 63% at 27811 units, while Hyundai’s total production is 27366 units, with a growth of 19%.

“Going forward, our expectation would be to maintain the No 2 position in the industry.” said a Tata Motors spokesperson. Experts and analysts also believe that Tata would definitely maintain its sales growth in future as the demand of Nano segment is huge. Automotive practice leader at Pricewaterhouse Coopers, Abdul Majid said, “The newly-created Nano segment has huge opportunities and, therefore, Tata Motors is likely to sustain its numbers because of the higher volumes it will generate,”

However, Hyundai Motors states that they are still in No.2 position, since they manufacture only passenger cars and not utility vehicles like Tata’s Sumo, and the comparison should be made only for passenger cars. Apart from these three major auto giants, other prominent auto companies like GM and Ford have also given good percentage in sales in June.
