Tata Motors, the largest vehicle maker in the Indian market, on Tuesday moved the Kolkata high court, challenging the legality of the state government's Singur Land Return Act. Interestingly, the auto maker’s move came just an hour after the Hooghly administration pasted notices of reacquisition on the mail gate of the disputed land acquired by Tata Motors.
Company’s counsel Samaraditya Pal filed the matter at chief justice J N Patel’s residence on Tuesday evening. Moreover, the company has notified the state government that it is challenging the petition and has asked them to not to disturb their operations in Singur.
According to MLA Becharam Manna, "The whole country is watching this landmark development. Those who had said that land once acquired can't be returned should watch these proceedings. Tomorrow, we shall meet the district magistrate and demand that the land be returned to the farmers soon. There are some rumors that the land will be handed back on lease. This is incorrect. The farmers will get ownership of their plots."
It is to be mentioned here that the Tata Motors had to shift its Nano manufacturing unit from Singur (West Bengal) to Sanand in Gujarat due to a farmer’s agitation, led by Mamta Banerjee.
