Tata Nano, launched as India’s most affordable car, has been witnessing a steep drop in sales in recent times. Produced at the Tata facility in Sanand, Gujarat, the company sells around 1, 000 Nanos every month. Although Tata Motors feels it is no longer viable to produce the Nano, the company is working on alternate plans for the small city car to continue its sales on emotional grounds.

Reports indicate that the Indian car manufacturer is also considering introducing an electric version of the car. Speaking about the future of Nano, Satish Borwankar, COO of Tata Motors said, "going forward, alternative plans for Nano is being considered. For instance, the electric version of the car. The production of Nano is not a viable proposition.” However, apart from sentimental reasons, reports indicate that the shareholders have also insisted on continuing the production for the Nano.

The Sanand plant's assembly line produces three passenger vehicles (PV), namely the Nano, Tiago and the Tigor.  Satish Borwankar further added, "The production volumes of Tiago and Tigor are substantial as compared to the Nano, which is very small.” Additional details regarding the future plans for the Nano will be known over the next few months. Although the company has chosen to remain tightlipped about future developments, we believe that Tata Motors might introduce an electric version of the same to boost its sales.
