So far, Tata Indigo eCS has put on a decent show in the India automobile market. Quite recently, Tata Motors has tried to improve on key areas of this sedan by launching an updated version of Tata Indigo eCS. The aim is to attract domestic customers in order to boost its sale numbers in the country. Notably, Tata Indigo eCS was pioneered as a sub four-metre sedan at the time of its launch. With the rolling of this updated version, the auto company claims that it has been able to enhance the vehicle's powertrain, cabin, suspension and gearbox for a better on-road driveabilty.

The biggest improvement that has been done in the updated Indigo version is its gearbox. The company claims a feather-shift transmission system in the vehicle as compared to the old unit. The claims prove to be pretty justifiable for the improved version offers gearshifts that are easy to engage at the time of driving. However, there is still some scope of improvement left in the gearbox for it lacks that familiar chunky click at the time of slotting.

The engine of the car has been tweaked a little in order to better its tractability. Turbo-lag is not noticeable while driving on the City roads, but out on stretched highways, the engine does feel out-of-breath. Tata Motors claims that Indigo eCS is the country's most fuel efficient sedan. When taken for a test drive, the car gave a mileage of up to 15.3 km per litre in the city. On highways with stretched roads, this sedan was able to offer a mileage of up to 19.6 km per litre. Thus, seeing the mileage numbers, the claim of the company does seems slightly exaggerated, but nonetheless, the mileage capability is still within acceptable range. Acceleration and pick-up aspects of this sedan have enhanced a little due to tweaked engine, but still remain pretty much obscured while driving as against the previous version. However, the overall city drive has noticeably become more smooth with improved suspensions in place to soak up extra force while confronting ups and downs on the city road.

The front fascia has undergone some changes with the addition of new diamond-shaped grille with chrome surrounds. Addition of new smoked headlamps and new chrome outlines fog lamps have also revamped the appearance of this sedan. The bumper has been tweaked a bit too to further accentuate the appeal of the front portion. Rest of exteriors are pretty much the same as the old version. Interiors of this sedan have also undergone some changes in bits and pieces. The new dual-tone interiors adds a new flavour to the cabin of this vehicle. The old T-shaped steering wheel has been replaced with conventional four-spoke steering wheel.

In the old unit, cabin had more noise and vibration at the time of on-road driving. Especially, this was more noticeable at upper speed levels. Tata Motors seems to have done well to improve on NVH level in the cabin. Notably, NVH is vehicles stands for Noise, Vibration and Harshness. The cabin of this updated sedan gives out only a little noise at the time of vehicle movement.

Though, as aforementioned, Tata Motors has put in efforts to modernise the cabin by the introduction of new dual-tone scheme, a little has been done about the all-black dash plastics and switches that do not look impressive. The driving position too is not very comfortable for the driver as options like to height adjustable steering are still missing.

Having discussed about the improvements made to the updated version of Tata Indigo eCS as against the old unit, it seems that a lot still needs to be done for giving a real competition to its peers in the market driven by dynamically changing preferences of customers. Customers would like Tata Motors to do a re-check on this vehicle and come up with a more stylized Indigo eCS.
