"We do not want to sit on the land. We will return it if the state government compensates us for the investments made there," says Ratan Tata, Chairman, Tata Group. The company is ready to return the land to West Bengal if the state government compensates the investments.
After the most unfortunate incident in the history of Indian auto industry, Tata Motors was forced to shut down nearly complete plant and relocate its Nano project to Sanand in Gujarat. Ever since then, the whole issue has been a point of heated political discussion in industrial and political circles.
Tata Motors currently holds 997 acres of land in Singur allotted by the state government. Tata also reiterated that it does not have any plans for the land, neither is there any proposal from the state government. "We are ready to cooperate with the state government if it had any plans with the land", he said.
On the other hand, Tata Nano plant in Gujarat is expected to be completed by early 2009 and begin production as well. Meanwhile, Tata Motors continues to make deliveries for Nanos across the country. It delivered 2501 units of Nano during August.
