Tough European emission norms and capacity constraints have led Tata Motors to look for newer engine options for its Jaguar and Land Rover brand. The company currently sources its engines from Ford Motors but they are fairly large engines with large capacities. Tata Motors will utilise its expertise in developing compact engines and low cost philosophy along with JLR’s technical know-how to develop smaller engines in India and overseas.

Tata Motors is currently planning to assemble Land Rover in India and intends to sell the car at competitive rates. It intends to bring down the cost to increase its market potential without letting its quality and luxury being compromised. Moreover, JLR is also facing pressure due to stricter emission norms in Europe which means it has to downsize its engines and calls for synergies between the two companies to develop more fuel efficient and eco-friendly engines with similar or better performance capabilities.

Tata Motors is planning to develop new engines for Jaguar and Land Rover models, said Tata Motors chief executive Carl-Peter Forster. However as per the official spokesperson of Tata Motors, “There are capabilities in the Tata Motors group (Tata Motors in India and Jaguar Land Rover in the UK) and that there could be an option to develop smaller engines in-house. It does not mean that Tata Motors will develop engines for all Jaguar and Land Rover models in the future to replace Ford. Ford is a long-term and trusted partner of Jaguar Land Rover.”
