      India's largest automobile company, Tata Motors unveiled its new Micro Bullet-Proof Vehicle (MBPV) on the first day of the 7th International Land and Naval Defence Systems Exhibition, also called the DEFEXPO India 2012. The expo is commenced on 29th March at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi and will end on 1st April 2012. The concept launched by Tata is first of its kind and has been designed to help the elite forces in indoor combat. This highly mobile combat vehicle will prove beneficial during indoor combat inside airports, railway stations and various other crucial infrastructure.


      Along with the concept vehicle, Tata also showcased four other defence vehicles, namely the Tata 12x12 Prahaar Missile Carrier, Tata Light Armoured Vehicle, Tata Mobile Bunker and Tata 6x6 7kl Refueler. Additionally, concept vehicles like the Tata Quick Deployment Mobile Communication Terminal (QDMCT) were also on display.

      Present at the event, P. M. Telang, Managing Director - India Operations, Tata Motors, said “The launch of our new combat & tactical vehicles and equipment, leveraged from our strength in design and development of a wide range of commercial vehicles, now enables us to cover the entire defence mobility spectrum. Tata Motors defence solutions already covers the complete range of logistics and armoured vehicles that have also been popular in supporting the police and paramilitary forces in counter insurgency operations.”

      The company also showcased the scaled models of its Futuristic Infantry Combat Vehicle (FICV) (Tracked & Wheeled) concept, which included the turret. The proposed layout of the manufacturing unit of the company was also showcased at the expo. The Indian Army has issued Expression of Interest (EoI) for the FICV-a ‘Make Indian’ project to four Indian companies and Tata Motors is one of them. Depending upon the indigenous design and development in collaboration with key technology partners, the company responded to the EoI in October 2010.

      Striving to augment the scope of its defence business right up to the frontline combat, the company is offering an extensive product portfolio. Tata’s portfolio includes combat, tactical and logistics vehicles along with troop carriers and advanced equipment. With the showcase of its diverse portfolio, the company aims to strengthen the defence mobility spectrum. Moreover, it is designing and customising its product portfolio to meet the changing needs of the modern defence forces.

      Tata Micro Bullet-Proof Vehicle (MBPV) is being developed by Tata in collaboration with VRDE-DRDO. It has been designed to offer a protected mobility solution for indoor combat against insurgents to the elite commando forces of India, namely NSG, Marine Commandos, Para Battalions and Force One. The commando forces have felt shortage of this kind of solution for a long time to overcome multiple hostage situations, wherein insurgents forcefully occupy confined premises, houses, hotels, malls and airports.

      Developed for indoor combat, the MBPV has been incorporated with several advanced features, such as:

      • Bullet resistant panels for protection
      • Compact dimensions
      • 4-wheel assisted turning for easy movement within indoor confines
      • High power-to-weight ratio for fast and agile movement during combat
      • Firing ports for retaliatory action
      • Added capability of climbing stairs

      Tata 12x12 Prahaar Missile Carrier is an indigenously developed high mobility, all-terrain and all-wheel drive vehicle. The Tata LPTA 5252-12 X12 vehicle has been jointly designed with R&DE–DRDO, particularly for missile launcher-cum-carrier applications, including integration of Prahar, BrahMos and Nirbhay missiles.

      It has state-of-the-art electronic controlled heavy duty engine and automatic transmission along with high mobility features. Although it is normally operable in 12x8 mode, the vehicle can operate in 12x10 and 12x12 modes too, depending upon the requirements of the terrain. Some of the highlights of the vehicle are:

      Tata Light Armoured Vehicle has been designed for the internal homeland security and state police forces. Both these elite groups have the responsibility of keeping the state secure, which demands them to constantly move around areas that are extremist hotbeds. Thus, they need vehicle that can not only help them defend themselves in case guerrilla attacks but also help them counter ferociously.



      Tata has designed Tata Light Armoured Vehicle keeping in mind all these requirements of the forces. Not only is the vehicle suitable for counter insurgency operations, but also for patrolling. The vehicle has been incorporated with features that are superior to its competitors. The light armoured vehicle excels due to its optimum performance, convenience and safety features. Furthermore, it will be by CMVR regulations post armouring, which is obligatory for operating the armour vehicle on roads in the country.

      Tata Mobile Bunker has been developed on the LPA 713 4-wheel drive platform to enable swift and secure movement of troops in naxal affected states. A useful platform for retaliatory action, it is not affected by gunfire, matching ballistic protection of NIJ Level III.       Tata 6x6 7kl Refueler is an indigenously developed high mobility, all-terrain and all-wheel drive refueler vehicle. LPTA 2038 6x6 Refueler vehicle has been specially designed for the Indian Armed forces, Paramilitary, State police, DPSUs, State Government & Municipal agencies and Aviation industry.

      The Indian Armed forces has already trial evaluated the base vehicle for varied applications, including Common Gun Tower, HMV with material handling crane and Multi-Barrel Rocket launcher GRAD BM 21. For all terrain applications, Tata jointly with M/s WEW (Germany) developed the demountable fuel bowser on LPTA 2038 6x6 HMV for fuel storage and dispensing.

      Tata 8x8 Water Purification System has been developed in collaboration with M/S. WEW (Germany) on the LPTA 3138 8x8. This mobile water decontamination system is suitable for all terrain and weather conditions. It has been specially designed for the Armed Forces and Paramilitary Force to ensure availability of safe drinking water in disaster struck areas.       Tata 8x8 Missile Carrier is an indigenously developed high mobility, all-terrain and all-wheel drive vehicle.       Tata Mine Protected Vehicle (MPV) has been designed to safeguard its passengers against powerful explosive mines, during ambush and sudden violent attacks. With ballistic protection of NIJ Level III, it safeguards the occupants against gunfire as well. Useful for the military and paramilitary forces, the well-protected vehicle has better mobility and takes troop protection to next level.
