Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL), the leading car maker of the country, has hiked the prices of the diesel variants of its compact sedan Swift DZire by Rs. 8,000 to 12,000. Therefore, buyers will have to pay Rs. 5.99 lacs, 6.52 lacs and 7.34 lacs for the LDi, VDi and ZDi variants of the car, respectively. This 2-2.5 per cent increase in prices was put into effect due to rising input costs. Since consumers in India are steadily moving away from petrol cars, the company refrained from raising prices of the petrol variants of the model.

A senior official of the company stated, "The company is feeling the pressure of input costs. To mitigate the impact, we have hiked the prices of only diesel variants of the new DZire with effect from May 1."

In February 2012, the manufacturer brought forward the compact version of the entry level sedan at an introductory price, which was expected to be raised soon. At the time of the launch, the petrol versions of the model were priced between Rs. 4.79 lacs and 6.54 lacs. On the other hand, the diesel editions were placed within the price bracket of Rs. 5.80 lacs and 7.09 lacs. Built on the platform of the new Swift hatchback, this new compact model measures less than 4 metres in length, which makes it eligible for the 10 per cent excise exemption the Government of India provides to small cars.

Maruti Suzuki offers three petrol variants with 5 speed manual transmission and one with 4 speed automatic transmission, along with the three diesel versions with the 5 speed manual gearbox. The petrol powered variants of the Swift DZire come with a 1.2 L engine, whereas Fiat's 1.3 L multi-jet unit is assimilated in the diesel editions. The former is capable of producing 86 hp of power at 6000 rpm and 114 Nm of torque at 4000 rpm. On the other hand, the latter generates maximum power of 74 hp at 4000 rpm and highest torque of 190 Nm at 2000 rpm.

In spite of launching the new iteration in the market in February 2012, the company still offers the previous version of the cars in the domestic market in a bid to target the fleet segment. The old model of the Swift DZire is available in the market between Rs. 4.94 lacs and 7.29 lacs (Ex-showroom Delhi).

Since its launch in the domestic market, the new Swift DZire model has performed exceedingly well and wrested market share from its three main competitors – Toyota Etios, Tata Manza and Mahindra Verito. The company sells over 15,000 units of the car on a monthly basis, thus outselling many cheaper hatchbacks as well.

In March 2012, the prices of all cars in Maruti Suzuki's domestic portfolio were raised by up to Rs. 17,000 due to an increase in taxes announced during Union Budget 2012. Before this, the manufacturer increased prices of all models, except Swift DZire, in January 2012 by 0.3-3.4 per cent due to growing input costs. For the buyers, it meant a minimum hike of Rs. 2,400 for the SX4 model and maximum of Rs. 17,000 on the Swift Diesel. On the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), Maruti Suzuki's shares are trading at Rs. 1,308.55 per piece, a decline of 0.47 per cent.
