Scania AB, a Sweden based subsidiary of the largest European car maker Volkswagen, is planning to invest Rs 250 crore in the Indian auto market. Scania is a leading truck maker and plans to establish a truck and bus assembly unit in Bangalore.
The new assembly plant of the company, which will be employing as many as 800 people over the period of next five years, will be rolled-out in the early 2013. The company will be launching high end trucks which will be competing with the likes of trucks of Volvo and Mercedes Benz. Both Mercedes and Volvo have their assembling facilities in India.
Speaking to ET, Mr. Henrik Fagrenius, managing director, Scania Commercial Vehicles India, said, "With growing need for infrastructure, there is a demand for more modern trucks who deliver better turnaround time and we hope to cash in on that, with our range. We are aiming to produce and sell 2,000 heavy trucks and 1,000 intercity buses and coaches per year within the next five years."
