Skoda Auto Limited, the Czech auto maker and subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, is believed to be working on a hatchback version of its Rapid mid-size sedan for the domestic car market. At present, the Skoda Rapid is offered in notchback and sedan versions in many international markets, and its upcoming hatchback avatar would be designed as a global model too.

As per reports, the Rapid’s hatch version is going to be based on the Skoda VisionD concept vehicle. This VisionD model is expected to be the company’s new design language, which is to be used in most of its future products. The Skoda Rapid hatch would be introduced in the European market, but no information is available regarding the Indian launch of this car. The Czech car maker is expected to make an official announcement on the Rapid hatchback in the next few months.

Andreas Hafemann of the Chinese arm of Skoda has affirmed that the company is developing a hatchback version of the Rapid model, which should make its global public debut soon. At present, Skoda Rapid competes in the mid-size sedan segment of the Indian auto market and shares platform with the Volkswagen Polo. The stunning car is also offered in an automatic variant and remains among the most sought after models in its class. The Rapid sedan is up against Honda City, Hyundai Verna Fluidic, Maruti Suzuki SX4, Ford Fiesta, Nissan Sunny and Renault Scala, amongst others in the country.

Skoda Auto India, the domestic subsidiary of Czech car maker, offers its Fabia premium hatchback in the country, at present. Despite being a well-made product with premium looks, the Skoda Fabia is quickly becoming dated and is witnessing regular fall in sales in the Indian auto market. Experts believe that the idea of replacing the under performing Fabia looks promising on the cards for Skoda Auto India. However, it must be noted that the Czech car maker has revealed no interest in bringing its Rapid hatchback to the Indian shores. Therefore, the domestic car enthusiasts have no option but to wait and watch the developments regarding the yet-to-be launched Skoda Rapid hatchback.
