As per a data published by the Society of Indian Automobiles Manufacturer (SIAM), the auto makers in the domestic market delivered 139,632 cars in the country during the month of June 2013. It must be noted that the demand for passenger cars dropped for the eight month in a row and till now, no remedial has been taken for the same. When compared on year-on-year basis, the sales of passenger cars dipped by almost 9 per cent in June 2013. Industry experts are of a view that the demand for cars remained on a lower pace because of increasing cost of ownership and dwindling growth of the economy.

On this scenario, the President of SIAM, S. Sandilya was quoted as saying, “The slow economic growth, high interest rates and fuel prices, high inflation are all affecting consumer sentiments. Government needs to have a re-look and bring a stimulus package for the auto industry which will help in achieving higher growth.”

During the month of June 2013, the demand for motorcycles reduced by 9.2 per cent, amounting to 799,139 units, while the sales of bus and truck were also down by 13.5 per cent to 56,197 units. The country's largest passenger car maker, Maruti Suzuki India Limited reported a fall of 8.17 per cent in its domestic sales to 65,172 units over 70,977 units reported in the same tenure of last year. On the other hand, Hyundai Motor India Limited registered a nominal sales increase to 30,577 units in June 2013 from 30,363 units reported last year.
