Japan-based car manufacturing company Honda Motors plans to launch the sedan variant of its best-selling hatchback, Brio, to gain volumes in terms of sales. The company aims to place the new launch in the entry level sedan segment, below the Honda City, its top selling mid-sized sedan. It is expected that the company will most probably roll out the model by 2013, in with its strategy for the Indian auto market.

The leading car manufacturer is aiming at the first time car buyers in India, which is a time-tested strategy in the country for other car makers as well. The Japanese company is planning to lure the customers by pricing and placing the new sedan a lot lower than the City. Most of the car makers in the country have successfully increased their sales volumes by launching sedan versions of their popular hatchbacks.

Following the success of the Tata Indicaand then the sedan version of the same, Tata Indigo, which was the first successful sedan-hatchback duo, Martin Suzuki Swift DZire went on to become a runaway hit. The largest car maker in Europe, Volkswagen successfully introduced Polo-Vento combination followed by its sister company Skoda Auto which launched Fabia and Rapid, built on the same platform. On the other hand, Toyota went on to become the fourth largest car maker in the country riding on the success of its Sedan-Hatchback combination of Etios and Etios Liva.

According to Amman Master, automotive analyst, JD Power Asia Pacific, the new Brio sedan will be offered first in Thailand, just like its hatchback model, and then it will come to India by the festive season. He further stated that the new sedan will complement the best selling Honda City and will further add to the car maker's strength in the ultra-competitive sub-compact sedan market in India. The Japanese company may also add an all-new compact Multi Passenger Vehicle (MPV) based on the Brio platform to its portfolio in India.

Master further added, "Named Brio MPV in our forecast, we expect production to begin in India by early 2015." However, the communication department of Honda refused to divulge any information. The company spokesperson said, "We do not comment on media speculations." The company operates in the country as a joint venture Honda Siel Cars India (HSCI) and is facing low sales volumes in the country due to the shift towards diesel cars.

The Japanese car maker has been compelled to adopt an aggressive stance concerning its products to recapture its share in the market. It has plans to add the diesel variant of its Brio hatchback soon, the first diesel car in its all-petrol portfolio. The upcoming sedan is just the starting point of the many new products the company would be launching from time to time to keep up with the pace of the competitive Indian auto market.
