Royal Enfield, the oldest two wheeler maker in the country, on November 2, 2012 said that the company, in 2013, may receive orders more than its production capacity of 1.5 lac units.
Talking about it Venki Padmanabhan, CEO of Royal Enfield, which is a part of Eicher Motors, during the last phase of the roadshow of Thunderbird 500, said, "The combined capacity with the Chennai new plant will be 1.5 lac units and it might get exhausted in 2013 if our current growth rate continues.” He further pointed out, “The new plant is on 50 acres and so we can add capacity at ease with a new line beyond 1.5 lac units as and when needed."
Padhmanabhan said that the company had grown at 50 per cent in the previous three months and he expected the growth to continue even in the coming months. Royal Enfield's sales have grown by 25 per cent in Punjab and Chandigarh and the monthly sale in these states has touched the 1500 mark, which was at 1,100 units per month in 2011. "Till October the company sold 82,000 units. In the 2012 we expect to sell one lac units against 75,000 units in 2011," he said.
Company's new Chennai plant, with a total investment of Rs. 150 crore, is expected to be operational by the first quarter of 2013. The company sees a ray of hope in the Thunderbird brand that accounts for merely 10 per cent of its total sales.
The various models of Royal Enfield available in the Indian market include Bullet 350, Electra, Classic 350, Classic 500, Classic Chrome, Thunderbird 500, Thunderbird 350 and Desert Storm.
Some of these bikes come at a price equivalent to a Tata Nano car. Despite being expensive, this two wheeler maker continues to attract customers to its excellent performing and superior bikes.
