Renault Kwid earns zero stars at ASEAN NCAP crash test

New Car Assessment Program for Southeast Asian Countries alias ASEAN NCAP has given a zero-star safety rating to the India manufactured Renault Kwid which has scored a total of 24.68 points. The Kwid, Renault’s entry level product, has scored 10.12 points for adult protection (AOP) and 14.56 points for child occupant protection (COP). As the vehicle is not offered with safety assist technologies like ABS, ESC, seatbelt reminders, etc, it has failed to score any points in the 18-point Safety Assist Technologies (SAT) category as well.

The ASEAN NCAP reportedly gives 50 percent weightage to AOP and 25 percent each to COP and SAT before handing out the final rating. Back in May 2016, the India manufactured Kwid had scored zero-stars, however with safety updates it saw a marginal improvement of one star in September 2016.

Speaking on the occasion, ASEAN NCAP Secretary-General, Khairil Anwar Abu Kassim said, "We are truly disappointed to find that there are still cars out there that do not offer high degree of safety levels to its occupants in the ASEAN region. What is more disappointing is that these cars are sold in countries that recorded one of the highest numbers of road fatalities; in which WHO published Thailand with 14,059 fatalities while Indonesia had 26,416 number of road fatalities."
