Just like many other Indian automobile companies which are exporting vehicles, Renault too is all set to begin shipping its popular SUV, Duster. Talking about it, Renault India Managing Director Marc Nassif told reporters "We will start exports of Duster. The first shipment will begin much soon to the UK..."

Currently Mahindra and Tata are the two Indian companies, which ship some of their Sports Utility Vehicles to the foreign market while Hyundai and Maruti export small cars. Renault would be the third to export SUV and Chennai would serve as its hub for exporting vehicles. Nassif said that the company would use Ennore Port for shipping the vehicles. "Globally whatever Renault wants (with a right-hand option), it will come from Chenna,” said Nassif. He further added, "Our priority is Indian market. Products we are exporting will be a different one. The product what we will be exporting to the UK will be a different one. It will completely be different (to the UK market), but it will be sold as Duster brand."

Replying to a question on the benefits of using the Oragadam facility for exports, he said, "It is obviously scaling the operations. It is an actually a huge activity for us. It helps us when you share the cake with your vendors. It is also easier to have more stable activity in our plans".

Taking into consideration the fact that the Duster became a highly popular car within just a few months of its launch, he said that Duster with right hand drive option would be exported to other markets as well which include Western Africa, South Africa, Malaysia and Singapore markets. He, however, said "That will start step by step."

Replying to a query on sourcing its components from India for serving Renault worldwide market, Nassif said that the company had sourced components worth Rs. 500 crore from the Indian market last year and the company was expecting components worth the same amount this year too.

Nassif was in Chennai to participate in the three-day conference Auto Serve, which was organised by industry body CII. The event was inaugurated by British Deputy High Commissioner Mike Nithavrianakis, who said that the after market support in his country created 4 lac job opportunities.
