Nissan Motor India has communicated that production at its Chennai factory will not be hampered due to the fire that recently broke out at a warehouse which supplies parts to the plant. A day before on May 9, this warehouse, operated by third-party supplier Yusen Logistics Company caught fire and was almost completely destroyed. It had the facilities to keep spare parts and accessories for the Chennai plant.

As per a statement issued by Nissan India, it was said, “A contingency plan is being finalised to minimise any potential disruption to the normal supply of some after-sales vehicle parts, although there are no further details to add at this stage.” Nissan's manufacturing unit is capable of producing 4,00,000 vehicles a year, by making use of spare parts and accessories from the warehouse. This $ 1 billion factory, borne out of an alliance between Renault and Nissan makes hatchback Nissan Micra, Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) Renault Koleos and Renault Fluence, for both Indian and international markets. The plant was started three years back, in March 2010.

On May 9, at 2:15 am, a fire broke out at the warehouse situated on Sriperumbudur-Oragadam road. Fortunately, no one was injured in this calamity, which was possibly caused by short circuiting. A few fire tenders from Sriperumbudur, ten Metrowater tankers and personnel from six other fire stations were sent to the spot immediately after the blaze started. It took an hour an a half for more than 60 firemen to douse flames at the warehouse. Apart from this, the warehouse's roof also caved in during fire fighting, but firemen managed to escape without injuries. Automotive sheets and rolls for cars were destroyed in the flames. At the time that this fire took place, al least 30 employees were present on their shifts inside the building. All of them responded swiftly and were able to escape in time.
