The oldest automobile company in India, The Premier Automobiles Ltd., now known as 'Premier Ltd.', is all set to deliver RiO, its new compact SUV, in the country. The car will be equipped with the powerful 1.3 litre Multi-jet diesel engine which has been sourced from FIAT India Automobiles Ltd.

The Premier Automobiles Ltd. was established in 1944; however, it initiated its commercial manufacturing in 1948 after signing license agreements with Chrysler Corporation and later with FIAT, Italy. It remained the automobile industry leader till the mid 80's but over the years, its name diminished from the Indian market. Currently, Premier has 55 dealers across the country providing sales and services to customers and is expected to raise the number to 100 by December 2012. Premier's assembling facility is also set to produce over 1,000 units each month in its initial phase. The company has also planned to set up over 200 authorized service centres called Premier Authorized Service Stations (PASS). These new PASS will be equipped with all facilities to support the company's latest launch, RiO.

Premier will badge the sourced 1.3 litre Multi-jet diesel engine of RiO as 'CRDi4'. This engine is used by current leading car producers in the country and will consequently offer several advantages to RiO such as better service, easy availability of spares and maintenance. The compact SUV will be in adherence to BS 4 emission norms which will improve the vehicle's drivability. RiO will provide an excellent fuel efficiency of 19 kmpl both in the city and on highways.

The 'CRDi4' is a 1,248 cc engine comprising four cylinders. It offers a maximum power of 72 bhp (53 kw) and a maximum torque of 72 bhp (53 kw) @ 4,000 rpm. The overall length of the compact vehicle is 3,970 mm with an overall width and height of 1,570 mm and 1,730 mm, respectively. The wheelbase of the vehicle is 2,420 mm along with the front track of 1,305 mm and rear track of 1,310 mm. The SUV provides a turning circle radius of 4.7 m and a 200-mm ground clearance.

“The initial dealer response to the new version of the RiO with this amazing engine has been overwhelming. We expect this vehicle to delight customers immensely: it is great looking and now thrilling to drive.... a true value-for-money proposition. The RiO is for those who want to be different; to stand apart,” said Maitreya Doshi, Chairman & Managing Director, Premier Ltd.

The Premier RiO will be available to buyers in black, white, red and silver colours with an attractive price range starting at just Rs. 6.7 lacs (ex-showroom Pune).
