Porsche AG, a world renowned German premium automotive marque, has roped in ace tennis star Maria Sharapova as its new brand ambassador. As per reports, the company has signed up the 26 year old Russian for the next three years, as part of their global communication campaign. Interestingly, Sharapova won the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart last year, for which she was presented with a white Porsche 911 super sports car.

Expressing her delight on becoming the new face of Porsche cars, Sharapova quoted as saying, “This is a really special day for me. I have had the privilege to be associated with some of the best brands in the world, but now to be partners with Porsche, is such an amazing honour.”

Maria Sharapova becoming the new face of Porsche is a surprising move, since the German sports car maker is known to hire only male athletes as its brand ambassadors. This makes Sharapova the German auto maker’s first female sports personality signing. The Russian tennis superstar already endorses many internationally renowned brands, such as Tag Heuer, Nike, Canon, Samsung and Gatorade, amongst others. The world number two has also represented Land Rover in the past.

Speaking on the same, Mathias Miller, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Porsche AG, said, “We are fully committed to these activities for a long term. And with Maria Sharapova, we are now extending our involvement in women’s tennis globally. Maria Sharapova is an exceptional athlete. She combines top performance in her sports with elegance and power. These are precisely the qualities that are embroiled in our sports cars.” Porsche also sponsors Germany’s National Women’s Tennis Team.
