Porsche has revealed the 718 Cayman at the Beijing Motor Show 2016. The Cayman is like the recently-launched 718 Boxster with a fixed roof and now comes with new turbocharged engines and updated styling.

Possibly the biggest change in this new Cayman is under the hood. The 2.7L and 3.4L flat-six boxer engines have been replaced by two entirely new 2.0L and 2.5L twin-turbo flat fours. Both engines churn out 25bhp more than the engines they replace and also put out more torque. The base 718 Cayman will get the smaller 2.0L engine which produces 300bhp, does 0 – 100kmph in 4.7 seconds and top out at 274kmph. The Cayman S will get the larger capacity 2.5L motor which makes 350bhp and 419Nm of torque. The S will reach 100 in 4.2 seconds and will max out at 285kmph. Gearbox choices include a Porsche standard six-speed manual and a seven-speed PDK dual clutch automatic.

Updates to the exterior include new sculpted bumpers, new taillights and revised side intakes. The Cayman, just like the new 718 Boxster, will feature a single trapezoidal exhaust on the base variant whereas the more powerful S version will get a dual pipe sports exhaust system. The Cayman and Boxster now look more alike than they have ever before.

Inside, Porsche has refreshed the entire dash from the outgoing Cayman. There is a new 918-esque steering wheel with a dial on it to switch between driving modes. It also gets Porsche’s latest PCM infotainment system.

For the 718 Cayman, Porsche has retuned the suspension, tightened the steering rack, widened the rear wheels, installed larger diameter anti-roll bars and enlarged the brakes. The car will also get Porsche’s Active Suspension Management system and the Sport Chrono pack as optional extras.

The Porsche Cayman was always one of the best handling sports cars around and now with all these mechanical changes it can become even more relevant. This coupled with an updated and appealing body it makes a tantalising prospect. The car will go on sale internationally later this year.
