Volvo’s performance arm, Polestar, is moving out of the shadows, out to create an identity for itself. Polestar had announced that it will build a new car on its own and it is reported that the new car might debut as early as September at Frankfurt.

The first independent Polestar is said to be a coupe with 600bhp of power on tap from a hybrid powertrain. Looking at the current Polestar line-up, the tuner has been able to generate 420 horsepower from its hybrid setup comprising of a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine. If they manage to bump the horsepower to 600, you might see the records for specific output per litre of displacement for production cars going for a toss. Or, it might be an electric-biased hybrid setup, none of which can be confirmed right now.

But this is not the first time that the power figure of 600bhp has been discussed by Polestar. It is said that Polestar wanted to build a 600bhp version of the S90 and the V90, but that project never kicked off. The new Polestar will share most of its components with existing Volvos to benefit from the economies of scale and not go overboard with their budgets in the development of an all-new car.

The arrival of the all-new Polestar complete Volvo’s transformation from a boring car brand to a modern go-getter as it can be seen from the design language employed in all new Volvo cars. We will have to wait for at least one more month before the teasers and the scoops start coming out giving us more dope on the Polestar.
